Signature Workshops
These are the four workshops I've offered most often because each forms a firm and versatile foundation on which students can build their personal creative practice. These workshops are available through institutions and as custom classes.

Kitchen Table Jewelry
Want to make jewelry without investing in an expensive setup? Learn how simple tools and safe materials can turn your desk or table into a productive jewelry studio. We’ll cover sawing, texturing, drilling, polishing, clasp fabrication, chain making - and more! Create professional - looking pieces to wear or give. Perfect for both novice jewelers and those wanting to reinvigorate lapsed skills. |
Jewelry That Grows on Trees
Beautiful, versatile, and widely available, wood is an ideal alternative material for jewelry. Learn to make the most of wood's palate of colors and textures using tools and techniques appropriate for use in a home studio. Topics include basic shaping and finishing, surface embellishment such as resin inlay, pique, and stone-setting, and creating more complex dimensional form such as rings and cuffs. |
Beginning Hand Carving
A carver needs both the conceptual skills to "see" the form inside a block, and the technical skills to set that form free. Students will develop both skill sets through a combination of demonstrations and supervised work time. Our focus will be on getting the most out of a small range of versatile and efficient hand tools. First get a handle on the basics by roughing out and carving simple spoons, then apply the same principles to carving 1:6 scale figures. Finally, complete both pieces using a range of finish carving and surface design techniques. Expect to leave with either one completed piece and several samples, or a few works-in-progress--as well as the knowledge they need to tackle whatever comes next! |
Carving Cottonwood Bark
The bark shed by cottonwood trees is an intriguing material for carving that offers dramatically unpredictable patterns, irregular shapes, and a soft but smooth texture. Bark responds better to strategy than to force and is a great material for beginners or those with lower hand strength, as well as for experienced carvers looking to build skill and sensitivity. Students will learn bark preparation, layout and roughing, tool selection, detailing, and finishing. We will primarily use hand tools but demonstrations will also cover some power tools and creating larger carving blocks. This process requires patience; expect steady but slow progress |
